Would you walk across hot coals to support your local hospice? Well now you can!

This November, join us for the hottest event in our calendar, and take on a Firewalk!

All participants will be fully supported with an in-depth training session led by a certified Firewalk instructor before walking barefoot across red hot embers to support local people facing incurable illness and bereavement.

After the walk you’ll receive a finisher’s certificate and we’ll take plenty of photos to share on social media so you can proudly share them with friends and family. 

Registration for the event is £25 which covers the cost of putting on the Firewalk. There is a minimum sponsorship target of £150 for this event. 

This event is not suitable for under 12s. Any participants aged 12-17 will be contacted for parental consent. 
 

Terms and conditions

1. General
  • These booking terms and conditions apply to everyone participating in St Helena Hospice’s Firewalk event and those who attend as spectators. Upon entry you accept these terms and conditions.
  • The minimum age for participants to register is 12 years. Anyone under the age of 18 must have consent from a parent or guardian and be accompanied by an adult who takes responsibility for them at all times throughout the event 
  • Walkers must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  •  All walkers should be well hydrated (drink plenty of water). 
  • Please ensure your feet are clean and free from massage and pedicure oils.
  • No one is forced to walk on fire and peer pressure is not allowed.
  • The fire is very real. The embers will be glowing red hot –  the temperature is around 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. You will have bare feet, and they will not have been treated in any way.
2. Booking process, prices and payment
  • Registration is non-refundable and non-transferable. Registration is £25.00 and all participants are required to raise a minimum sponsorship of £150 per person. 
  • Places are limited on the Firewalk event and entries are processed in the order we receive them. The closing date for entries is Monday 7th November at 5.00pm. 
  • The Firewalk event is a St Helena Hospice event to raise money for St Helena Hospice.  We ask that all sponsorship raised is for St Helena Hospice, please do not raise money for other charities, trusts or funds.
  • All funds raised from taking part in this event, including sponsorship will be allocated to general hospice funds to cover all St Helena Hospice services.
  • All participants taking part in Firewalk do so at their own risk. In no event shall St Helena Hospice be liable for any injuries, loss or damages whatsoever, including indirect, punitive, special, incidental or consequential losses connected with any aspect of this event. 
  • All participants are responsible for their own medical condition. If in doubt about your ability to complete the Firewalk or you have a medical condition that might affect your ability to participate, please consult your doctor prior to taking part in the event.
  • On no account are drugs or alcohol to be brought into the event site or consumed during the event. St Helena Hospice reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone we suspect is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. 
3. Changes to the event
  • St Helena Hospice cannot be held liable for any changes made to the event for safety reasons. Nor can we accept any liability for any changes made to the venue or date of the event. 
  • St Helena Hospice reserves the right to alter the start time of the event at any time. 
  • If St Helena Hospice cancels the event due to reasons beyond control such as snow, thunderstorms, natural disasters and terrorism, entry fee will not be refunded. An alternative date will be selected and all participants will be admitted to this event.
  • St Helena Hospice reserves the right to cancel this event at any time due to reasons within our control. In the event of this happening, entry fees and sponsorship will be refunded in full. 
4. Filming and photography
  • We may film or photograph participants and volunteers taking part or attending events and use such footage or photographs for fundraising use including, but not limited to: advertising, publications, marketing material, merchandising, and other documents made available to the public; and for our sponsors/partners to publicise their involvement or association with the event. Please note, photos and videos may come from a wide range of sources (including spectators), and is sometimes not arranged by St Helena Hospice. If approached by a photographer or videographer and you do not wish to be filmed or photographed, please let them know. We do, however, reserve the right to use footage or images supplied to us where you might be included.  
  • No personal details (including names) of anyone under 16 years old will be used in any publicity materials without the written consent of their parent or legal guardian, but we may use images where children are incidentally included, e.g. the starting line. 
5. Data protection
  • The information you provide when you register will be shared only within St Helena Hospice. It will not be shared with any other organisation or third party. 
  • By taking part, you agree to St Helena Hospice contacting you via telephone, letter or email for any matter relating to your participation in this event. 
  • St Helena Hospice may contact you occasionally by post to tell you more about our services and other ways you can help, including opportunities to donate, volunteer or fundraise. You can ask us to stop these communications at any time.

6. Disclaimer
  • All participants taking part in the Firewalk event do so at their own risk. In no event shall St Helena Hospice be liable for any injuries, loss or damages whatsoever.
  • It is important that you pay attention to all the training and heed the advice and instruction of the trainer, firewatchers and spotters. Whilst absolute safety is not guaranteed proper procedure reduces risk to the achievable minimum.

Frequently asked questions

What is Firewalk event?
The participants will undergo training of around one hour. When the fire has burned to red-hot embers it is raked level and prepared for the walk. Participants go to the fire – remove their footwear and one by one are invited to walk the coals.

Will it hurt?
The sensation is described by some as walking on eggshells, others as walking on hot sand. Each walker has his or her own experience. UK Firewalk have not known walkers to experience pain, indeed when the opportunity arises many will walk across the coals more than once.
Is the fire real?
The fire is very real. The embers will be glowing red-hot – we can often measure the temperature at around 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. 
Is it safe?
There is an inherent risk in any activity involving fire. It is important that participants pay attention to all the training and heed the advice and instruction of the trainer, firewatchers and spotters. 
How should I prepare?
There is no preparation to undertake. No treatment of the feet or mental exercise, just the training provided at the seminar. You should abstain from the consumption of alcohol or drugs prior to the event. Any person who is in the opinion of the trainer unfit to participate will NOT be permitted to take part.  Feet should be clean and free from any massage or pedicure oils.
What should I wear?
There is no special clothing required. Casual comfortable clothes are best. Please remember fires can be quite dirty and clothes may become ash stained. Footwear needs to be easy to remove and will need to be replaced before going back indoors so a hand towel might be a good idea. Flip flops are a good idea, especially if the ground is cold. Nail varnish and toe rings are fine.
Is there toilets on site?
Yes, toilets are available to use inside Orpen Memorial Hall
Finally, all walkers should adhere to the following:

Please ensure your feet are clean and free from massage and pedicure oils.
