Safe Harbour

St Helena’s Safe Harbour project reaches out to people who traditionally have had difficulty accessing hospice services, such as people who are homeless, have a history of drug and alcohol addiction, people with a mental health problem, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ groups, refugees or those living in areas of deprivation.

Safe Harbour helps ensure that vulnerable local people receive the hospice care they need, are able to live well with their incurable illness, and die with dignity in a place of their choice.

Safe Harbour was set up in 2016 and is run in collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support to help tackle inequalities in care.

Since Safe Harbour's launch, referrals to St Helena have increased significantly in areas of deprivation and we have developed key relationships with homeless support groups, neighbourhood schemes and services for vulnerable people.

In 2018, Safe Harbour won the Innovation in Tackling Inequalities Award at the Hospice UK awards
