Key personnel

Our senior management team is made up of five directors who are responsible for the smooth day-to-day running of the hospice and its care services under the overall leadership of the Chief Executive.

Director of People and Culture

About Hayley

As the Director of People and Culture, Hayley is responsible for the people and culture and volunteer services. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) and has significant experience working at a senior level.

Hayley is passionate about ensuring that St Helena provides an environment where our people, both staff and volunteers, feel supported, engaged and valued, enabling them to deliver excellent services to meet the needs of our community.
Emma Tempest

Medical Director

About Emma

Emma has been a doctor for just over 20 years and worked in a range of medical specialties before pursuing her passion for palliative care.

Emma was a consultant at St Helena for four years before taking on the role of medical director in 2020. Her clinical role, supporting patients and families, both at the hospice and in the community, informs her leadership role.

Emma is married with two boys and, being outnumbered, is learning to love football.
Lisa Parrish

Lisa Parrish

Director of Care

About Lisa

Lisa joined St Helena in March 2020 as Director of Care. She also acts as the Registered Manager, Controlled Drug Accountable Officer and Caldicott Guardian. 

Her previous experience includes various cancer and end of life roles within the NHS as well as experience in community services and commissioning. 

Lisa enjoys gym classes, swimming and walking her west highland terrier. She is a member of a book club and is married with two sons.

Finance and Commercial Director

About Brian

Brian joined St Helena in 2015 as Finance Director, a role now expanded to Commercial Director encompassing retail and lottery.

He is a chartered accountant beginning his career at PWC before moving into the television and electronics industries. He has been working in hospices for the last fifteen years and has been in director roles at both St Nicholas Hospice Care and St Elizabeth Hospice.

He is married with three children and three grandchildren. Favourite pastimes are sport, particularly motor sport, though mainly as a spectator these days; and long walks with Millie the rescue dog.

About Mark

Mark became Chief Executive of St Helena in 2013. He is Chair of the North East Essex Health and Wellbeing Alliance and active in national work to improve end of life care.

His previous experience includes several years as a senior manager in the NHS and 10 years in HM Prison Service. 

Mark is married with two children. He enjoys cooking, is a keen runner, and loves country walks with his golden retriever Yoshimi.

Our Trustees and honorary roles

Our Board of Trustees is made up of members of the community which St Helena serves. The role of the Trustees is to provide strategic direction for the hospice and to ensure the local community is represented in its aim to meets its objectives while maintaining our core philosophy and values.

David, a partner in a property consultancy, was elected to our Board of Trustees in 2011.

Catherine Morgan

Catherine is Regional Chief Nurse - East of England and has more than 25 years' experience within the NHS.
James McCarthy

James McCarthy

James is a qualified accountant (FCAA) and marketing professional (FCIM) with more than 35 years experience in leadership positions. He has particular skills in finance, managing change, project management and strategy. He joined the Board in September 2021.

Treasurer

Kate runs a CSR and Business Growth consultancy. An accredited MBA and CA, she joined the Board in August 2019
Fran Hyde

Fran Hyde

Fran lectures and researches in not for profit marketing. She joined the Board of Trustees in September 2019.

Ken, a retired financial services professional, was elected to our Board of Trustees in 2017.

Mary, a retired senior lecturer, joined the Board of Trustees in 2015.
